Chocolate and Hazelnut Swirls

I have a confession…I don’t like cinnamon rolls. They look delicious and cosy to make, but I’m honestly just not a fan. I wanted to make something similar but more fitting to my tastes, and so these chocolate and hazelnut swirls were born.

The Dough
This recipe is super easy. As long as your dough rises well, the rest will come out perfectly regardless of what you do. To make sure you get a good rise, you’ll need to make sure you’re careful when using your yeast. Yeast can’t handle temperature of over 60c, so I aim when warming my butter to not exceed 50c, just to be on the safe side.

Method:
Add your flour, sugar and salt to a bowl and whisk them together
In a separate bowl, warm up your butter and milk in the microwave until it’s around 45 degrees
Add your yeast to your warm milk mixture and whisk it in till it dissolves
Add your warm milk mixture to your dry ingredients and mix to form a ball of dough
Put your dough on a lightly floured surface and knead for around 4-5 minutes
Roll out your dough until it’s a smooth sheet about the thickness of a £1 coin
Spread on your Nutella and then roll your dough up into a cylinder
Cut off each end, then cut your slices. You want these to be slightly thinner than your desired size as they’ll rise
Place your rolls in a pan, leaving a little bit of space between them
Oil a sheet of cling film and cover your pan, then leave it somewhere warm to rise for at least 1 hour
Towards the end of the hour, preheat your oven to 190c
Bake your rolls for 24-26 minutes, then remove from the oven
Let them cool and then serve. If you’d like to drizzle some icing on top like I did, you can mix up some icing sugar with milk till it’s at your desired consistency
